I had to ask someone to pick up my gifts and it was very likely my gifts would have been stolen otherwise

We do have a tool to help with this. :)
If you go to your wishlist settings, you can enable or disable the wishlist. When you disable the wishlist, it will save everything but make them unviewable for anyone who comes to your wishlist. This means that no one will be able to purchase items while you are gone. Then when you return, you simply have to re-enable your wishlist and everything is back!
